People Over Profits Launches TV Ad Campaign Urging President Biden to Stand with Health Care Heroes, not Big Health Insurance Companies

Biden administration’s interim final rule on surprise medical billing would close hospitals in vulnerable underserved and rural communities

Tampa, Florida – Today, People Over Profits launched a TV ad campaign urging President Joe Biden to reverse course on a new health care regulation that would threaten to close hospitals in vulnerable rural and underserved communities. The rule would make it harder for America’s frontline doctors and nurses to continue fighting the COVID-19 pandemic on the frontlines.

President Biden promised to get COVID-19 under control and he has taken important steps to do just that. Unfortunately, the administration’s recent regulation on surprise medical billing would have an adverse effect on our healthcare safety net – putting both our urban and rural hospitals at risk,” said People Over Profits Chairman Sean Shaw. “Countless news outlets and organizations have described the law as a ‘win’ for the big health insurance companies at the expense of our frontline providers and the patients they care for. It’s not too late for President Biden to implement the No Surprises Act as Congress originally intended – as a win for patients – not a massive giveaway to the insurance companies.”

Congress passed the No Surprises Act in December 2020, finally protecting patients from surprise medical bills that are no fault of their own. Lawmakers clearly intended to put doctors and health insurers on a level playing field to resolve billing disputes. However, many provisions in the Biden administration’s interim final rule give health insurance companies the power to lower reimbursements that doctors, nurses, and hospitals depend on to provide care. The regulation is has already been described as a financial windfall for insurers.

People Over Profits is dedicated to protecting access to health care for everyday Americans by standing against corporate influence in our health care system. Large health insurance companies posted record profits during the pandemic, while 1.4 million health care jobs were lost in April 2020 and have not recovered to pre-pandemic levels. Time is running out to protect our frontline heath care heroes and the patients they care for. President Biden has until January 1st, 2022 to direct his administration to implement the No Surprises Act as Congress originally intended.

The campaign will primarily feature TV ads running in the Philadelphia, PA, Washington, D.C., and Delaware shore markets, along with digital and print ads.
